Initiating Change: Redefining Strategies within the South African Public Sector
A renaissance of governmental and societal expectations in South Africa has compelled a rethinking of the parity of educational institutions. In spite of change initiatives proposed at State level, the question of the processes of reformation and redress within the education landscape remains obscure. The concept of transformation implies a pervasive influence on both groups and individuals embarking on the change process; essentially it is a reconfiguration of a new non-traditional structure and workplace practices. Moreover, the potential for advocating linking of strategy and change processes to debates about consensus and divergence of transformation policies and procedures poses a major challenge to the facilitators of the change mechanisms, particularly after a decade of South Africa achieving democracy. Responding to this challenge, this study investigates the strategic trajectory of the change process using a qualitative study of managers and other key players tasked with the implementation of the transformation directives. This paper assesses the evolving strategies of transformational development in South Africa, with particular focus on the prospective process which may assist key policy makers and executors move towards an efficient redress of the education landscape.
