Contemporary theorists and practitioners both agree that the organizational capability to change in a proper way and at the proper time becomes one of the key determinants of organizational success. Another important trend in management is particular attention to people as to key resource for long-term organizational competitiveness in the turbulent environment. In our opinion, in the light of these trends, the tasks to develop organizational capability for change merge with the tasks of human resources management. At the same time, the wide body of literature suggests evidence that namely the human factor causes most of the problems during organizational change.

This paper discusses approaches to human resources management within the frames of different theories of organizational change, and presents results of empirical research on specifics of human resources management during organizational change in Russian companies. The research revealed specific approaches to human resources management during this period that influenced positively total efficiency of organizational change programs. Interestingly, these “efficient” approaches do not coincide with the most frequently used ones.
