The article addresses the extent to which the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has changed since its inception in 1979, how it might be resistant to change and if some of the changes that have occurred within the organization’s history have transpired in preparation for its operations in the future. By undertaking a comparative analysis that is embedded in the history of the organization it may be possible to identify the changes that have occurred within the AFP. Furthermore, an examination of policing allows us to be aware of some of the perils and pitfalls that should be avoided in the future whilst also enabling people to learn from history in order to be better prepared for the future. The research demonstrates how the AFP has moved from being an organization that was para-military due to its militaristic organizational structures and management styles to one which is flexible and responsive to the changing local, national and international environment in which it operates.
