The Development of Relational Leadership Through Team Coaching: Team Coaching to Support Cultural Change
Coaching is on the increase. Organisations are seeing it as the way to bring about change in individuals to bring about change in the organisation. This presentation will discuss how a major corporation in the Australian banking and finance industry used team coaching to introduce relational leadership as part of a cultural change program during a period of restructuring.
Identifying and monitoring desired team behaviours, and measuring progress toward that goal, were an important part of this coaching-supported change. The impact on performance was tracked and the important lessons learned about the benefits of relational leadership within a technology team were documented. Team members’ responses to a survey provide rich information on the extent to which the adoption of relational leadership has dramatically improved team member resilience and, as a result, the overall performance of the team. We argue that understanding the changes in individual and team member performance, and using the important lessons learned about the role of relational leadership in supporting cultural change, will inform the growing practice of coaching within organisations.
