There is little doubt that the increase in managerialism and accountability in HE has an effect on pedagogic direction and academic freedom. Current research which considers whether the move to mass education has inevitable led to new management policy and practice will be presented. The workshop will then discuss and develop the issues that surround this viewpoint. Participants’ will be encouraged to share their own and their institutional perspectives. For example, debate may focus on issues around: ‘quality v creativity’ or ‘accountability v academic freedom’ or ‘education v business’.

The research discussed is part of an ongoing Doctorate in Education which is considering the professionalisation and future of HE in the UK.
