The government's commitment to improving the nation's health and building a modern 21st century NHS has resulted in the development of new organisational roles and structures. Indeed many of the current UK health reforms and government plans outline initiatives that focus on a flexible and adaptable workforce who can plan and deliver new services in different ways, creating the foundations for a modern and responsive workforce which can provide integrated and seamless care.

This paper outlines evolving practice within Unscheduled Care environments (emergency care) using action research as a systematic process to evaluate the development of nursing roles, and the impact this has had on service delivery and patient care.
