Developing Vision and Strategy Using an Appreciative Inquiry
The development of vision and strategic action planning in organizations has too often been primarily a top-down process, the results often being lack of buy-in, loss of innovation, and failure to implement. Appreciative Inquiry is a radically positive organizational philosophy that, when applied in a whole-systems approach, can transform organizations. It identifies current strengths as the positive core on which to build, brainstorms all the possibilities of what the organization could become at its best, designs what the organization will become, and moves the organization forward in making the new vision become its reality. This workshop will take participants through the design of the overall strategic planning process, and will provide hands-on experiences in applying Appreciative Inquiry in the context of their own organizations. Extensive examples of the overall process, and each step in the process, will be presented from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, where this process has been used extensively at Faculty, departmental and program levels.
