Keys to Strategic Sourcing: Using Technology & Leading Change Effectively
What contributes to the commitment to change in order to achieve strategic sourcing relationships at an institutional level? Many factors impact the movement from transactional buying to a strategic sourcing methodology in an organization. The long-term relationships developed in strategic sourcing are a significant change for purchasing professionals and require an overall organizational effort to both change and manage the relationships.
In our current global climate, change has become as prevalent as sending an e-mail or talking on a cell phone in public. This change has become a continuous journey that many are learning to embrace in order to be successful. In order to achieve continuous change, a level of commitment to improve the strategic sourcing of organizational procurement relationships needs to be present. This commitment assists an organization in creating and developing new and evolutionary ideas and models into the workplace by allowing the employees to perform and contribute to the overall vision and direction of a company. “If there is only feigned commitment to the change, it will resurface as resistance during the transition period.” (Bridges 2003, page 7). The transition period or psychological period of change is when the individual adapts to the change either in a positive or a negative way. There are ways to cultivate and grow organizational commitment that can lead to positive outcomes from this important phase of change that effects strategic sourcing in a positive manner.

Michael Wisma currently has achieved 20 plus years of experience in Business Management, Workforce Development, Supervision, Technology, Human Resources, Procurement, and Training. In his current position as a Purchasing Agent for Purdue University. Michael has maintained responsibility for purchasing and developing long-range budgeting plans for many areas of the University. In addition to maintaining complete responsibility for training and development of departmental staff, he has also developed and maintained long-term relationships with vendors of Purdue University. Michael is a Certified Purchasing Manager, certified through the Institute for Supply Management. Mr Wisma's experience includes five years of vendor management experience in Purchasing, fourteen years of business management experience, and fifteen years experience handling purchasing and procurement of multi-million dollar operations. He is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Leadership in Supply Chain Management, with an emphasis on vendor relationships.

Professor Schmidt currently is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial Technology. She received her Ph.D. from Purdue University in Operations Management in 1996. She worked as a senior application analyst at Northrop Electronics Division and Lockheed California Company in Hawthorne, California from 1983 to 1987 and a manufacturing systems consultant at Ernst & Young in Irvine, California from 1998-1990. She started teaching as an assistant professor and department head at Saint Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana from 1996-1999. At the same time, she was also a lecturer at Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision at Purdue University. She has joined the Department of Industrial Technology at Purdue University since August 1999. Since she came to Purdue, she has developed new courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Classes taught include Purchasing, Inventory and Warehouse Management, Global Transportation and Logistics Management, Production Planning, Production Cost Analysis, Industrial Organization, Project Management, Global Supply Chain Management, and Analysis of Research in Industry and Technology. Currently she is developing the Supply Chain Management Technology Laboratory, which is in the early stages. Her research areas include inventory management, distribution, logistics, and supply chain management.
